You log into Walmart Seller Center and some of your best sellers say Unpublished. No sales, no traffic, and often no email explaining why. It's one of the most common problems Walmart sellers ask me about, and the good news is that most causes can be fixed quickly once you know where to look.
What "unpublished" means on Walmart
An unpublished item still exists in your catalog, but shoppers can't see it or buy it on Walmart.com. Walmart unpublishes items automatically when something about the listing, the price, the product or your account doesn't meet its rules.
Some reasons are quick to fix, like a missing attribute. Others need a request to Walmart, like a trust and safety review. Either way, the first step is the same: find the exact reason.
How to find the reason in Seller Center
- Go to Items in Seller Center and filter the list by Unpublished.
- Check the unpublished reason shown for each item. Walmart gives a reason code or short description.
- Export the list if you have a lot of items, and sort by reason, so you can fix them in groups rather than one by one.
1. Pricing: the reasonable price rule
This is the most common reason I see. Walmart compares your price with the same product elsewhere online, including on Walmart itself, and unpublishes items it considers unreasonably high. Shipping charges can count toward that comparison too.
How to fix it:
- Compare your price, including shipping, with the same product on other major sites.
- Lower the price, or offer free or cheaper shipping, to bring it into line.
- Check your Amazon and Shopify prices too. A high price elsewhere doesn't hurt you, but a much lower one can make your Walmart price look unreasonable.
- If the product is unique to you, make sure it has the right identifier so Walmart isn't comparing it with a different item.
Once the price is fixed, the item usually republishes automatically after Walmart's next check.
2. Missing or incorrect content
Walmart needs certain attributes for each product type: things like brand, size, colour, materials and key features. If required fields are empty or wrong, the item can be unpublished or never published in the first place.
How to fix it:
- Download the item report and check which required attributes are missing.
- Fill them in through a bulk spreadsheet or your integration, using Walmart's exact accepted values.
- Check images meet Walmart's rules: a clear main image on a white background, at a good resolution.
Content fixes also improve your Listing Quality score, which helps your items get shown more often.
3. Identifier and product matching problems
Every Walmart item needs a valid GTIN, usually a UPC barcode. If your barcode is registered to another brand, matches a different product in Walmart's catalog, or isn't valid, the item can be unpublished or attached to the wrong listing.
How to fix it:
- Use barcodes bought directly from GS1 for your own brand.
- If your item has been matched to the wrong product, open a case with Walmart Partner Support with proof of your barcode ownership.
- If you sell a branded product made by someone else, make sure you're allowed to sell it.
4. Trust and safety or compliance reviews
Walmart reviews items for safety, legal and policy reasons: restricted categories, banned ingredients, product claims, recalls, and items that need certificates or test reports. These items are often unpublished with a trust and safety reason.
How to fix it:
- Read the reason carefully. It usually says which policy applies.
- Remove claims you can't support (for example, medical or "FDA approved" claims).
- Gather any documents Walmart asks for, such as safety test reports or certificates, and submit them through a Partner Support case.
- If the product genuinely isn't allowed on Walmart, remove it and focus on the rest of your catalog.
5. Intellectual property and brand complaints
If a brand owner reports that your listing uses their trademark, images or copyrighted content without permission, Walmart may unpublish the item. Repeated IP complaints can put your whole account at risk.
How to fix it:
- If you're the brand owner, consider joining Walmart's Brand Portal to protect your listings.
- If you received a complaint, contact the person who filed it, and provide invoices or authorisation if you're allowed to sell the product.
- Remove anything you don't have the right to use, such as borrowed images.
6. Fulfilment and shipping settings
Items can drop off the site when they have no shipping template, a handling time Walmart doesn't allow, no stock, or stock that hasn't synced from your inventory system.
How to fix it:
- Check each unpublished item has stock, a valid shipping template and an allowed lag time.
- Make sure your inventory integration is running and actually updating Walmart.
- If you use Walmart Fulfillment Services, check the item has stock received at a WFS warehouse.
7. Account-level problems
If many items are unpublished at once, the cause may be your account rather than the items: performance falling below Walmart's standards, an expired document, or a payment or tax setting that needs attention.
How to fix it:
- Check your performance dashboard for on-time delivery, valid tracking, cancellations and response rate.
- Check your notifications and account settings for anything Walmart has asked you to update.
- Fix the root cause first. Items usually come back once the account is in good standing.
“Most unpublished items aren't a mystery. Walmart tells you the reason; the work is checking it every week and fixing it before it costs you sales.”
How to stop it happening again
The sellers who rarely see unpublished items are the ones who check regularly. A short weekly routine is enough:
Weekly Walmart listing check
0 / 7 DONEThe short version
When a Walmart item is unpublished, find the reason in Seller Center, fix your best sellers first, and build a weekly check so problems are caught early. Pricing, missing content and inventory sync cause most cases, and all three are easy to stay on top of with a routine.
